URUGUAY: The problems of de-dollarising

The government is continuing with policies aimed at de-dollarising the economy. Perhaps the most successful initiative has been the issuance of inflation-indexed peso bonds. Now 17.5% of the government's total debt is in index-linked bonds. The government has been less successful in tempting people to use pesos rather than dollars to buy things and in the banking system the dollar still dominates.
